Preparation method

  1. Separate the leaves from the thicker stems
  2. Keep the thinner stems attached to the leaves
  3. Place the leaves in a large bowl
  4. Cover with water and wash thoroughly
  5. Remove the spinach from the bowl by hand instead of draining the water
  6. This ensures that any dirt residue remains at the bottom of the container
  7. Leave the spinach in a colander to drain excess liquid
  8. Fill a medium pot with water until it is about 1/3 full
  9. Place over high heat until it reaches a boil
  10. Fit a steam basket over the pot
  11. Ensure that the water does not come into direct contact with the bottom of the basket
  12. Place half of the spinach into the basket
  13. Cover the pot with a lid
  14. Steam for approximately 5 minutes until the leaves have wilted
  15. Avoid overcooking so the vegetable does not turn bitter or lose its structure
  16. Alternatively, you may use a bamboo steamer basket
  17. Remove the spinach using tongs and place it on a serving platter
  18. Repeat the process with the remaining half of the leaves
  19. Finish by seasoning with olive oil and salt
  20. Serve immediately
