Look for plantains at most grocery stores or local markets. Cornmeal can be found in the baking or international foods aisle of supermarkets. Butter and vegetable oil are standard grocery items. Salt and pepper are available at any grocery store.
Preparation method
- Cut off the ends of the plantains and peel them
- Cut each plantain in half lengthwise
- Cut each half in half again lengthwise
- If the strips are too thick, cut them into three parts
- Slice each piece of plantain into cubes of approximately 1 cm
- Heat a large, non-stick skillet over medium heat
- Add the oil to the skillet
- Place the chopped plantains in the skillet and season with a pinch of salt
- Brown the plantains for about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly caramelized
