Homemade Crab Shell Appetizer

Ingredients

1/2 kg crab meat
20 crab shells
2 medium onions, chopped
2 ripe tomatoes, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 green bell pepper, finely diced
1/2 cup white vinegar
Black pepper to taste
Ground cumin to taste
Salt to taste
Olive oil to taste
Grated Parmesan cheese for topping (optional)

Where to find ingredients

Crab meat: Look for fresh or frozen crab meat in the seafood section of well-stocked supermarkets or at fish markets. Some specialty stores or Latin/Brazilian markets may also carry it.
Crab shells: These can often be purchased cleaned and ready to use at seafood markets or specialty stores that sell Brazilian ingredients. If unavailable, you can sometimes find them online or in stores specializing in seafood ingredients. Alternatively, if you are preparing whole crabs, you can clean and reserve the shells yourself.
Produce (onions, tomatoes, garlic, bell pepper): Available year-round in the produce section of any supermarket.
Vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, cumin, Parmesan cheese: Standard pantry staples found in any supermarket.

Preparation method

  1. In a pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil and sauté the chopped onion until golden
  2. Add the chopped garlic, black pepper, and cumin, sautéing for another minute
  3. Pour in the white vinegar and let the alcohol evaporate
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and diced bell pepper
  5. Cook the sauté until the tomatoes break down and the seasonings are well integrated
  6. Add about 3 tablespoons of olive oil and mix
  7. Incorporate the crab meat into the sauté
  8. Cook for approximately 5 minutes, just to heat through and meld the flavors
  9. Taste and adjust salt if necessary
  10. Distribute the crab filling into the shells
  11. If desired, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top
  12. Place in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese melts and is lightly golden
