Seabass and Shrimp Moqueca: Easy Recipe

Ingredients

1 kilogram seabass fillets
Juice of half a lemon
1 medium onion, sliced
2 green bell peppers, diced small
3 tomatoes, diced small
1/2 kilogram medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 shrimp bouillon cubes
1 bottle coconut milk (200ml)
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
1 tablespoon dendê oil
Salt to taste

Where to find ingredients

Seabass fillets can be found at most fish markets or the seafood counter of supermarkets.
Shrimp are widely available at supermarkets and fish markets.
Coconut milk is available in the international foods aisle of most supermarkets, or in Latin or Asian food stores.
Dendê oil (palm oil) can be found in Brazilian, Latin American, or African specialty stores, and sometimes in larger supermarkets with an international foods section. If unavailable, you can substitute with a good quality vegetable oil, though the flavor will be different.
Shrimp bouillon cubes can be found in the international foods aisle or specialty stores. You can substitute with fish bouillon or omit if preferred, adjusting salt accordingly.

Preparation method

  1. Wash the fish and season with lemon juice
  2. Set aside
  3. Chop the onion, bell peppers, and tomatoes into small pieces
  4. Set aside
  5. In a large pot, arrange half of the fish fillets
  6. Cover the fish with half of the chopped vegetables (onion, bell pepper, tomato)
  7. Arrange half of the shrimp over the vegetables
  8. Sprinkle one crumbled shrimp bouillon cube and half of the chopped cilantro
  9. Repeat the layers: the other half of the fish fillets, the remaining vegetables, the remaining shrimp
  10. Add the second crumbled shrimp bouillon cube
  11. Pour the coconut milk over the entire mixture
  12. Sprinkle the remaining chopped cilantro
  13. Cook over low heat, with the pot partially covered, for approximately 20 minutes, until the sauce thickens
  14. If necessary, add about 1/2 cup of water during cooking
  15. Stir carefully from time to time to avoid breaking the fish and to ensure the shrimp bouillon dissolves
  16. Incorporate the dendê oil and mix gently
  17. Taste and adjust salt if necessary
  18. Serve the moqueca hot immediately
