Where to find ingredients
Look for spaghetti noodles and vegetable oil in the pasta aisle and cooking oil section of your local supermarket. Soy sauce and cornstarch are usually found in the international foods aisle or baking section. Japanese broccoli, bell peppers, onions, carrots, and mushrooms are available in the produce section of most supermarkets or at local farmers' markets. Beef and vegetable bouillon cubes can be found in the soup or seasoning aisle. Pre-made yakisoba sauce and thinly sliced meat can often be found in the international foods aisle or Asian markets. If you can't find Japanese broccoli, regular broccoli can be substituted, though the texture will be slightly different. If you cannot find pre-made yakisoba sauce, you can make a similar sauce by combining soy sauce, oyster sauce, a touch of sugar or honey, and a little cornstarch slurry.
Preparation method
- Cook the spaghetti noodles #8 in boiling salted water until al dente
- Drain and set aside
- Prepare the vegetables: cook the carrot, bell pepper, onion, and Japanese broccoli in a covered pot with 1/2 cup of water and the dissolved vegetable bouillon cube
- Cook until tender but still crisp
- Season the meat strips with salt only
- In a skillet or pot, heat a little vegetable oil (if using) and brown the meat strips
- Add the browned meat to the cooked vegetables
- Prepare the sauce: in another pot, mix the prepared yakisoba sauce, soy sauce, sunflower oil, and 500 ml of water
- Dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold water and add to the sauce pot
- Also add the beef bouillon cube
- Bring the mixture to medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens
- Add the thickened sauce to the pot with the meat and vegetables
- Mix well and let it boil for a few minutes, stirring occasionally
- If desired, add sliced mushrooms
- Serve the sauce with meat and vegetables over the cooked noodles
