Where to find ingredients
Fresh crab meat can often be found at seafood markets or specialty fishmongers. If fresh crab meat is unavailable, good quality canned or frozen crab meat can be used as a substitute; drain and rinse canned crab meat thoroughly. Cleaned crab shells can sometimes be purchased at seafood markets or specialty Latin/Brazilian food stores, or you may need to clean them yourself from cooked crabs. Onions, tomatoes, garlic, green bell peppers, vinegar, salt, pepper, cumin, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese are widely available at most supermarkets.
Preparation method
- In a pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil and sauté the chopped onion until golden
- Add the minced garlic, black pepper, and cumin, sautéing for another minute
- Pour in the white vinegar and let the alcohol evaporate
- Add the chopped tomatoes and diced bell pepper
- Cook the mixture until the tomatoes break down and the seasonings are well integrated
- Add about 3 tablespoons of olive oil and mix
- Incorporate the crab meat into the sautéed mixture
- Cook for approximately 5 minutes, just to heat through and meld the flavors
- Taste and adjust salt if necessary
- Distribute the crab filling into the cleaned shells
- If desired, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top
- Place in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese melts and is lightly golden
