Traditional Dried Beef Casserole (Escondidinho de Carne Seca)

Ingredients

1 kg cassava (cooked)
1 liter whole milk
1/2 kg creamy cheese spread
2 kg dried beef (cooked and shredded)
200g chopped onion
200g unsalted butter
Grated Parmesan cheese for gratinating

Where to find ingredients

Look for cassava in the produce section of supermarkets or at local markets. Dried beef can often be found in specialty food stores or the international aisle of larger supermarkets. Creamy cheese spread is usually available in the dairy section.

Preparation method

  1. Prepare the cassava puree: in a blender, blend the cooked cassava with the whole milk and creamy cheese spread until you get a homogeneous and creamy mixture
  2. Prepare the filling: in a saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the chopped onion until translucent
  3. Add the cooked and shredded dried beef to the pan with the onion and sauté for a few minutes to integrate the flavors
  4. Assemble the casserole: in a baking dish, spread a layer of the cassava puree
  5. Cover the puree with all the dried beef filling, spreading it evenly
  6. Finish with another generous layer of cassava puree over the filling
  7. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the last layer of puree to gratinate
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for approximately 10 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and forms a gratinated crust
  9. Serve the casserole hot and garnish as desired
