Traditional Brazilian Mulled Drink (Quentão)

Ingredients

1 bottle cachaça (600 ml)
600 ml water
500 g sugar
Rind of 2 oranges
Rind of 1 lemon
50 g ginger, cut into small pieces
Whole cloves, to taste
Cinnamon sticks, to taste
1 apple, cut into small pieces

Where to find ingredients

Cachaça: Available in the liquor section of most supermarkets or specialty liquor stores. Look for brands from Brazil or South America.
Oranges and Lemons: Widely available in the produce section of supermarkets and at fresh markets.
Ginger: Found in the produce section of supermarkets, often near garlic and onions.
Whole Cloves and Cinnamon Sticks: Typically located in the spice aisle of supermarkets. Specialty spice shops also carry a wide variety.
Apples: Available in the produce section of supermarkets and at fresh markets.

If you cannot find cachaça, a white rum can be used as a substitute, though it will alter the traditional flavor profile.

Preparation method

  1. In a large pot, add the sugar, orange rinds, lemon rinds, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon sticks
  2. Place over medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar begins to melt and lightly caramelize
  3. Carefully add the cachaça and water to the pot
  4. Stir well to dissolve the caramel
  5. Let the drink cook over medium heat for about 20 to 25 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld
  6. After cooking, strain the liquid to remove the spices and rinds
  7. Add the chopped apple to the strained mulled drink
  8. If desired, keep warm over low heat before serving
